The verge, Tumblr now lets you hide your blog from the internet

텀블러를 사용하지 않은지 꽤 오래 되었지만 지난주 텀블러가 웹에서 블로그를 숨길 수 있는 기능을 발표했다. 개인이 Show this blog on the web 이라는 항목을 끄면 URL을 통해 들어오는 사람들은 404 error¹ 페이지를 보게 된다. 하지만 텀블러 웹이나 앱에서는 사이트를 그대로 확인할 수 있게 된다.

최근 텀블러 행보의 효과는 웹 기업이 아닌 좀 더 갇혀진 정원으로 만든다는 것이다. 나는 텀블러 이용자들이 웹 전체에서 그들의 블로그를 숨길 것이라고 생각하지 않는다 (비록 텀블러의 많은 유명 포르노 블로그들은 그럴지도 모르지만!). 이용자들을 Tumblr.com과 앱으로 유도하는것이 이용자들에게 타깃팅 된 광고를 제공하기 쉽게 만들 것이지만, 만약 그것이 텀블러의 타산 중 일부가 아니라면 어떨지 궁금하다. 개인 블로그를 방문하는 사람들에게 블로그가 삭제되었다는 것을 의미하는 404 페이지를 보여주는 결정에 의문이 든다. 올해는 웹에 매우 나쁜 한 해였고, 텀블러는 그것을 조금 더 나쁘게 만들었다.

The secondary effect of Tumblr’s move today is to make it less of a web company and more of a walled garden. I don’t imagine Tumblr users will hide their blogs from the web en masse — though creators of Tumblr’s many famous porn blogs might! But driving users to Tumblr.com and apps makes it easier to deliver targeted advertising to them, and I wonder if that isn’t part of Tumblr’s calculation in making such a move. I also question the decision to present visitors to private blogs with a 404 page, which implies the blog has been deleted. In a year that has been very bad to the web, Tumblr just made it a little more broken.

아이디어와 데이터들을 구조화하여 보여주려는 목표를 가진 웹 환경이 페이스북, 구글, 애플과 같은 IT 기업들에 의해 서서히 죽어가고 있다. 텀블러도 웹을 파편화하려는 흐름에 참여하고 있다.
